CALCULATING RARITY

What is rarity in the context of an NFT collection? Is it the number of times an element appears, with fewer being rarer? Is it considered rarer if it contains just a single rare trait combined with other less rare traits, compared to something with a lower ‘average’ array of ‘somewhat’ rare traits?

For the marblees, we wanted to control what is considered rare and what is not. Which is why we’ve decided to allocate a Rarity Score on the items ourselves. To us, rarity is not just scarcity — it’s more emotional than that. For example, a very small few of the marblees were created by some people dear to us as guest collaborators. To us, as creators, these are more rare than others and should be assigned as such — even though those items may contain some less rare traits.

Which is why we believe creators should own rarity and have decided to do just that!

Expect to see a Rarity Score when the marblees hit OpenSea!

To calculate rarity, we consider the following:

  • Number of eyes, arms, legs, eyebrows.

  • The dominant color.

  • The expression/emotion.

  • Style of eyewear and number of eyelashes.

  • And the style of mouth (does it have teeth, or a mustache, for example).

Lastly, we captured a ‘special attribute’ for the marblees lucky enough to have one — for example, does it have a hat, or has it found some ETHEREUM. We have kept this ‘special attribute’ out of the stats on OpenSea, as we think it’s fun to have a few surprises here and there when you’re browsing the collection :)

We then count the number of appearances and assign a value proportional to the collection (a 1:1 attribute scores 1,024). On top of this, a weight is assigned as we consider some traits more important than others.

You’ll see the collection on OpenSea includes this number.

While some marblees are more ‘rare’ then others, we still think each one of them is special.
